You’ve booked a photoshoot and as the date creeps closer, so do your anxieties. Please know that you are not alone in feeling nervous leading up to a photoshoot! Being in front of the camera is certainly NOT the most natural thing in the world for most people.
If you’ve somehow just stumbled upon this blog post, in addition to being a photographer, I’m also a professional ballerina, so I have plenty of experience both in front of and behind the camera. I’m here to put your fears at ease with 3 of my favorite posing tips!
Got a long skirt on? Swish that baby back and forth! Wearing a suit jacket? Let’s adjust those shirt sleeves! Showing off your outfit gives you a task to focus on and, let’s face it, you probably spent a good amount of time picking out what to wear…. Let’s showcase it!
When in doubt, turn on some music!! Bonus points during an engagement session if you play “your song” so you can practice some moves for your first dance.
My favorite way to ease clients into being front of the camera is to make sure I keep them moving. Even something as simple as walking while holding hands and looking at each other looks exponentially much more natural and relaxed than a static “pose.” Avoiding eye contact with the camera (and instead looking into the eyes of your looooooove) also helps take the pressure off. Maybe you’ll even forget momentarily the photographer is there at all with their camera!
